A fine jewellery designer and artist, Victoria von Stein, recently completed a bespoke ring design commission for one of her clients. The brief was to design a botanical cocktail ring to be worn at special events, dinner parties and special occasions using Victoria’s organic signature style. The ring needed to be a quality WOW piece to invest in that lasts a lifetime and that the client will desire to wear more often.
Inspired by the stunning exotic Banyuwana waterfall in Bali, Indonesia, the concept for the bespoke ring design was based on the story of “wrapping yourself” in the beauty of nature and connecting to exotic destinations that make you feel energised and joyful.
As her client loves the colour teal, Victoria sourced a cushion cut London blue teal Topaz that symbolises calmness and water’s deep energy.
Naming the ring BANYU, the project allowed Victoria to evolve her creative artistic skills and own visual language further by fusing sculptural forms with gemstones. She intentionally chose to elevate her handcraft skills in the ancient technique of wax carving to reflect and honour the beautiful Balinese craft heritage in stone and wood carving.
In her artistic skilled hands, flexible modelling wax was patiently scraped away, carved, and shaped to sculpt organic fluid forms with finely engraved leaves that evoke the smooth movement of water and rhythm of leaves.
In the design process, a saw, fine files, knives, chisels and sanding sheets were used to form her 3D design idea. The leaves wrap around the big central 16x12mm gemstone and awaken a sensuous, tactile, elegant look and feel for the wearer.
Once the wax model was finished, she outsourced the lost wax casting in London and worked with an expert goldsmith to set the gemstone with claws to let more light in. At the final stage the ring was polished with a contrasting matt and mirrored finish to accentuate the textures and curves.
Victoria is a jewellery designer, artist and graphic designer based in London. She weaves conceptual ideas and stories from her enriching exotic travel, la joie de vivre and the wellbeing effect of nature (biophilia) through her botanical jewellery and brings her hand-painted illustrations to life. Bespoke ring design, remodelling jewellery and illustration commissions are welcomed.
