British slow fashion brands to know

Going against fast fashion and hyped-up trends, British innovative, slow fashion brands are leading the way and making their mark not only in the industry, but also on the way people think about fashion shopping. Offering unique looks and igniting a deeply original sense of personal style while doing good is indeed an attractive proposition for many of us.

Need a wardrobe staple? Want something softer? Feeling nostalgic? On a look-out for vintage? Here are five British slow fashion brands to know.

1. Sheep Inc

Sheep Inc. is a pioneering clothing brand that uses proprietary technology and supply chain innovation to deliver next generation knitwear essentials with a naturally carbon-negative footprint. This is achieved by working with cutting-edge regenerative farms and supply chain partners that run on 100% solar power. Custom built supply chain technology gives real-time insight into production processes and NFC technology is integrated into each supremely soft garment.

A tap of the phone shows each garment’s unique digital fingerprint, giving detailed information about the environmental impact and background about the farms and manufacturers. It even connects you with a sheep from the same farm the garment’s wool is from. Sheep Inc. aims to fundamentally change how we view and purchase clothing while delivering best-in-class products with a unique customer experience and unparalleled sustainable credentials.

2. Beyond Retro

BEYOND RETRO is the famed vintage chain whose success is driven by its authenticity, sustainability and beautifully curated clothing at a good price. The company has remained a trailblazer, earning a reputation as the go-to destination for fashion-forward originals. Offering the largest selection of handpicked vintage clothing to style-conscious shoppers, each show-stopping store and the online shop is a dazzling celebration of style through the decades.

In a world of throwaway fashion, BEYOND RETRO provides customers with clothing without the carbon footprint. Through the cycle of vintage and second-hand products, Beyond Retro consistently seeks out innovative avenues to make a lasting impact on the fashion landscape, contributing to a much-needed circular economy.

3. Wax London

Wax is a London based brand born out of desire to make great clothes with character that don’t break the bank… or the planet. Their purpose is to create elevated clothing that inspires confidence and self-expression. They blend British heritage, Mediterranean sensibility and Indian craftsmanship and present all of that through a London-centric lens.

Their clothing is designed in London and draws inspiration from family, music, togetherness, the outdoors, parties, love, sport and London life. They believe in slow fashion, and with that mantra they partner with sustainable mills and suppliers from around the world who specialise in the highest quality production.

Their aim is to help minimise their footprint as much as possible. They’re really proud of their long-standing global partnerships with 83 wholesale customers across 16 countries, including .END clothing, Liberty London, Brown Thomas, Fenwick’s, Bloomingdales, Le Bon Marche, Flannels and Nordstrom.

4. Bee & Sons

Deborah Bee started her brand Bee&Sons in 2021 in order to explore a circular business model in the fashion arena. Inspired by Ghana’s famous quote “BE THE CHANGE YOU WANT TO SEE IN THE WORLD”, Deb has spent two years trying to understand the state of play in the business of fashion.

She says: “There is much talk within the industry about circularity. The truth is it’s harder than it looks; it’s expensive, it’s grubby and it’s time-consuming.

Most fashion brands have a marketing dpt at one end of the building, saying reputationally it is imperative to be considering the environment in every stage of our business. The design departments are in the middle, incentivised by sales alone. And the finance department is at the other end, insisting on growth.

I’ve experienced this first hand. Unless a company has dedicated itself to a new way of economic thinking, there is no single-minded approach and no change.” Deborah was the Creative Marketing Director of Harrods and Harvey Nichols.

5. Fleur Fairfax

Founded in 2020, Fleur Fairfax jewellery is a celebration of the sensational society and style of the Georgian and Victorian eras. Through a curated collection of singular antiques, and their Regency Revival modern line, the beauty and ebullience of these bygone ages comes back to life. The collections express the beauty and tradition of historic English jewellery.

Fleur Fairfax pieces make just as compelling a statement of individual style now as they did for the original 18th and 19th Century women and men, they first adorned. Fleur Fairfax jewels are artefacts that connect you to the past, at the same time looking brilliantly modern – they are exceptional pieces of self-expression that have a story to tell.

Fleur Fairfax believes in the power and the magnificence of jewels already in existence; that by re-imagining antique treasures, less gold and fewer new stones need to be mined. Their dedication to preserving the art and quality of British heritage craft in jewellery is at the heart of Fleur Fairfax design and manufacturing.

Their antique conversions and Regency Revival collection proudly use only 100% recycled gold, and responsibly sourced gemstone materials.  All Fleur Fairfax jewellery is designed in Gloucestershire and made in London. Each unique piece is handmade by their expert casting, enamelling, and stone setting partners in London’s historic Hatton Garden.
