Laura fishman abstract artist interview

Introducing abstract artist Laura Fishman who specialises in creating intuitive and colourful art pieces inspired by her love of nature. Being active with artist communities, exhibitions and associations in the United Kingdom, Europe and in the USA, Laura is one of a small group of artists who regularly works with BobCat Gallery, a small scale gallery specialising in original art at affordable prices.

Here we chat with Laura Fishman about her journey so far…

Tell us more about your journey into the art world.

I knew I wanted to be an artist at age 4, when while browsing through an art book I came across a portrait of Rembrandt. I remember thinking if being an artist could be someone’s job, then that’s what I was going to do. My mother always had paints and crayons for me use, encouraging me to draw on paper rather than on walls and furniture. I have been on my artistic journey ever since!

How would you describe your signature style and technique?

My signature style focuses on the dynamics of nature and the materiality of paint, such as plasticity and flow. Colour is a big influence and often acts as a stimulus for the creation of new work. My process is very intuitive and open to change. I start with a loose plan and let it evolve, where it usually takes an unexpected turn. I’m always trying out new ideas and have a passion for nature and experimentation.

Can you tell us about your latest work? Where did you find inspiration and what is the story behind it?

My latest work combines my signature style with detailed observations in nature. I have always loved being in nature, recording the world around me. My recent inspiration started in May 2023, which came from a book a glass artist friend gave me on butterflies. We were working on a collaboration in her studio on the theme. This was a catalyst for my new direction and series, which includes butterflies, birds and other wildlife.

Are there any exhibitions or events you are planning in near future?

Upcoming events and exhibitions include:

– 100×100 with BobCat Gallery, 1st – 30th April

Affordable Art Fair, Hampstead, with Mint Art Gallery, 8th – 12th May

– ‘Wunderkammer’ with BobCat Gallery at 54 The Gallery, 14th – 19th May

What is the best advice you’ve been given as an artist?

The best advice: To be a successful artist you need 20% talent, 80% passion.

My favourite quote: I might work on a painting for a month, but it has to look like I painted it in a minute.” -Willem de Kooning.
