abstract artist Leigh ferris

Leigh Ferris is a self taught abstract artist based in Surrey. Recent winner of the award of distinction at the Rochester Art Show,  she is also specialist nurse in organ donation which has a profound effect on her artwork. Here, she gives us an insight into her work.

Tell us more about your journey into the art world.
Art has appeared periodically throughout various points in my life. It has been a mindful way of passing time, a way of understanding myself and the world around me more, communicating my feelings, reflecting on experiences and sharing something beautiful that requires more than words.

A tool for self-reflection and discovery for me has now evolved significantly into a quest to improve and learn, and to ultimately bring joy to people through my art. I didn’t intend to travel down this path but I’m thoroughly enjoying the adventure!

How would you describe your signature style and technique?
My style has been described as quite loose and organic – a way of allowing paint and ink to live and breathe on the canvas. The process often involves tipping the surface of the canvas and watching puddles of paint seek out nooks and cracks on the surface.

Colours blend to make new tones, depths and highlights. The form is completely intuitive and somewhat automatic, comes to me in the moment and is never planned. Once the basic structure has appeared to me, I then bring out the finer points myself.

It’s thrilling for me to watch the painting come to life in front of me, while I try to exert some control over the colour, code, and character of it. I might have a theme in mind before I start, but as the process begins, I must completely let go of any control if I want to harness the magic, otherwise it looks too ‘painted’.

Can you tell us about your latest work? Where did you find inspiration & what is the story behind it?
I am in awe of the beautiful, bold, and monumental canvases of Helen Frankenthaler. I was able to see and experience them in-person at an exhibition of some of her key pieces at the Guggenheim recently, and was floored by the emotional pull they had on me.

My latest works are a very personal expression of gratitude to Helen for sharing those with the world. If my work were to ever have a similar effect on someone, it would be a dream come true.

Are there any exhibitions or events you are planning in near future?

As well as showing my work with BobCat Gallery in Putney Exchange during September, I’ll be at Surrey Art 2025, Epsom racecourse, 3rd – 5th October. You can find me on stand 19!

What is the best advice you’ve been given as an artist?
The best advice I’ve ever received, and something I try to remember every day I paint is ‘be authentic, always paint for yourself, and don’t compromise your art for other gains’.
