Contemporary landscapes, seascapes and semi-abstract, representational pieces by abstract artist Emma Griffiths capture an atmospheric moment in time and the beauty of our ever-evolving natural world. By focussing on the effect of changing light, colour and form, Emma’s work explores and reflects the connection between the natural environment and our human emotions and moods.
Here we chat with Emma about her journey so far…
Can you tell us your backstory and how you got into the art world?
As a child, I naturally gravitated towards creativity – with a love for textiles, art and creative writing during my school days. I went on to study fashion and textiles at degree level and followed with a career in the clothing industry. Whilst taking a break to raise my young son, I rediscovered my childhood passions and trained in further design disciplines, eventually working on a freelance basis in graphics and surface pattern design. However, as so much work was produced digitally, I missed the simplicity and freedom of creating by hand, and so several years ago returned to painting.

How would you describe your signature style and technique?
My contemporary landscapes, seascapes and semi-abstract pieces capture an atmospheric moment in time and the beauty of our ever-evolving natural world. By focussing on the effect of changing light, colour and form, my work explores and reflects the connection between the natural environment and our human emotions and moods.
Inspired by a love of the British countryside and coast – the belief in its healing and restorative powers, I bring both the serenity and the drama of land, sea, and sky to our indoor spaces. My artworks are produced using acrylics and oils, adding energy and dimension to each piece by creating interesting surface textures through layering, rubbing back, varying weights of application, visible brush strokes and the use of mixed media.

Can you tell us about your latest work? Where did you find inspiration and what is the story behind it?
My latest work is a large 100x100cm acrylic and mixed media, semi-abstract piece on canvas, titled ‘This Too Shall Pass’. Painted during a fairly turbulent personal period, the piece is inspired by the ever-changing nature of sea and sky and how we can look to the natural world as a reminder that everything is transient. Whilst there is drama and energy in the composition of the piece, I used a gentle, soft palette of colour to evoke the juxtaposition of chaos and calm.

Are there any exhibitions or events you are planning?
Yes, next month I’m taking part in Warwickshire Open Studios Summer Arts Weeks for the 3rd year running. The event takes place 22nd June to 7th July across Warwickshire with over 400 artists taking part, opening up their own studios or exhibiting as collectives in some fantastic, unique venues. What is the best advice you received as an artist?
I just love the book ‘The Creative Act – A Way of Being’ by Rick Rubin. Not only is it absolutely full of fantastic advice and observations for artists and creatives, but it’s lessons and profound insights can also apply to every- day life. This particular quote, which can be very relevant to artists getting hung up on creating the ‘perfect’ work but also to let go of the pursuit of perfectionism in all aspects of life and embrace the growth that comes through learning, mistakes, fun and failures is a great example:
“Perfectionism gets in the way of fun. A more skilful goal might be to find comfort in the process.”
