Karimoku Furniture will exhibit its four brands at Milan Design Week 2024, which will be held in Milan, Italy from April 15 to April 21, 2024, in four different exhibition halls. During Milan Design Week 2024, Karimoku Furniture Co. will hold exhibitions of its three brands: Karimoku New Standard, MAS, and SEYUN.

Each venue is located within walking distance of each other in different venues in the Tortona district in the heart of Milan, providing a space where visitors can experience the world view of each brand.

Additionally, Rho Fiera, the main venue, will host a significant exhibition highlighting Karimoku Case, a brand specialisng in furniture designed for architectural use.

Karimoku Case at Salone del Mobile 2024

Karimoku Case, a brand that develops furniture designed for use in architectural projects, will hold its third large-scale exhibition at Rho Fiera in 2024. The 160㎡ exhibition space will be collaboratively curated by Norm Architects which is the brand’s design director, and the independent architect Keiji Ashizawa.

The space will be generously utilised to showcase the works designed for CASE 09 “BELLUSTAR TOKYO” and CASE 10 “Azabu Hills Residence”, creating a space where visitors can enjoy the brand’s worldview as well as a number of items created through a unique design approach that re-thinks the relationship between space and furniture. The theme of the exhibition is “natural contrast”. Visitors will be able to see a new perspective of the brand with an awareness of the harmony between darkness and light.

Karimoku New Standard at Fuori Salone 2024

Karimoku New Standard (KNS) has been exhibiting at Milan Design Week since its first appearance in 2010. This will be the brand’s first solo exhibition since 2019. The exhibition will be held in a studio that is used by artists in the Tortona district, and will feature new works and other furniture. KNS has always valued cultural collaborations that transcend national and regional boundaries.

The exhibition will be presented as a single installation along with the works of artists from Japan and abroad. The space, with its classic Milanese courtyard, will be arranged in collaboration with Swiss stylist Connie Fusser and KNS Creative Director David Glättli. Whereas previously KNS has created personal and comfortable spaces, this time it will transform the space from an artist’s studio into a living environment; an aesthetically pleasing space that crosses the boundaries between furniture and art, you will experience the essence of KNS: technology, innovation, sustainability, and fun.

MAS at Fuori Salone 2024

This exhibition introduces the Japanese furniture brand MAS within the context of Milan Design Week. Curated by designer Ville Kokkonen, this brief research project focuses on Japanese cypress, Hinoki, which constitutes MAS main source-material and brand DNA. From architecture to agricultural equipment, Hinoki wood has been present within Japanese material culture across time in a variety of ways.

This introduction aims to display the unique characteristics and properties of the famous, distinctly scented tree species native to Japan. As an extension of this, you will be able to enjoy the aesthetics of MAS as both contemporary and future furniture.

SEYUN – ZAHA HADID DESIGN® x Karimoku

ZAHA HADID DESIGN® and Karimoku will unveil the new pieces of the Seyun Collection; a family of chairs, armchairs, bar stools, tables, and trays, all manufactured in wood, coherently creating a vibrant composition of visual and material continuity that amplifies both the integrity of the design and the quality of the manufacturing process.

Multisensorial experiences, combined with captivating floor and wall graphics, transform the existing exhibition space in via Tortona into an immersive, compelling journey to explore many of the characteristics and unique features of wood as a medium. The exhibited pieces give an insight into the nature of ZHD’s work, which is characterised by complex yet legible geometries with the implementation of advanced digital and technological solutions.

This, combined with the unmatchable quality of Karimoku’s artisanal yet high-tech, high-touch presents a comprehensive overview of the ongoing collaboration between ZAHA HADID DESIGN® and Karimoku ‒‒ highlighting their differences as well as their similarities, and how these are methodologically synchronised and complementary.

Karimoku Furniture Inc.

The origins of Karimoku Furniture Inc. date back to 1940, when Shohei Kato took over a longstanding timber company and established a small woodworking shop in the town of Kariya, Aichi. The company produced various wooden parts in the ensuing decades, developing a range of techniques and technology before launching its own line of wooden furniture in the 1960s. Building upon the concept of manufacturing high-tech and high-touch, the company established bases in timber production areas and soon developed into one of Japan’s leading manufacturers of wooden furniture.
