Introducing Kutemwa Skin, a London-based natural skincare brand founded by Besa Musama. Besa experienced skin dryness and acne but through using traditional botanical ingredients with natural healing properties she achieved clearer and more radiant skin. She uses this knowledge, heritage and traditions, working with scientists in the UK, to create Kutemwa Skin products so that people of colour can achieve the glowing skin they deserve.
Here we chat with Besa about her brand…
Can you tell us the backstory of the Kutemwa Skin? How and why it was started..
My story is rooted in Africa. Growing up in Zambia I experienced mild acne and dry skin, I was fortunate enough to be surrounded by traditional botanical ingredients with natural healing properties that helped me to achieve a clearer and more radiant skin.
During my time at university here in England, I pursued my love for beauty through makeup artistry. As a makeup artist my clients would share with me their skin concerns or insecurities such as acne, hyperpigmentation, and dull uneven skin which they wanted to cover up with makeup. This is when I identified the problem that these women were facing, they didn’t have a good solution to their skin concerns, so they didn’t feel confident in their own skin.
I realised there was a need for a natural simplified skincare routine that addresses their concerns and helps them achieve clear radiant skin, so they could feel confident in their skin. I drew from my experience with African botanical ingredients to create a product range that would be the solution to their skin concerns.
What is unique about your products?
Kutemwa Skin product range is unique because it is powered by African botanical ingredients that have been used for centuries now being formulated into a modern, current, and highly effective step-by-step skincare routine.
What are some of the ingredients and why did you choose them to use in your products?
I chose the African ingredients that I used to restore my skin when I struggled with breakouts and hyperpigmentation. Aloe vera was great for soothing my sensitive skin so I included it in the Radiance ACE Serum and Hydrating Face Tonic. Vitamin C is an ingredient I learnt I should always have in my routine to target dark spots and promote glowing skin. It is a key ingredient in our Radiance ACE Serum. Our pure Baobab oil is a source of vitamin E which strengthens skin cells and soothes blemishes or rashes.
Your favourite product and why?
Our Radiance Moisturiser because the texture is smooth and creamy. It has a subtle vanilla scent which is my favourite scent. It contains rich natural oils, jojoba oil sunflower oil and rice bran oil to balance and even skin tone. When I use it, my skin feels so nourished and protected.
Any plans for this year?
This year I am looking forward to reaching new customers so they can experience our incredible product range. Everyone who tries Kutemwa Skin products falls in love. I also hope to partner with some beauty product retailers soon.
