In her work, abstract artist Joanna Lynch celebrates the experience of discovery and the concepts of change and transience. Fusing drawing with painting and printing, sensitiveapplication of colour and energetic mark-making, Joanna’s artworks embody alanguage that is simultaneously calm and vibrant.
Here we chat with Joanna about her journey into the art world…
Can you tell us your backstory and how you got into the art world?
I studied illustration at Central Saint Martins, graduating in 2004. After a creative break and long career at Meta, I returned to image-making at the start of 2023 and now paint full-time from my studio in Deptford, SE London.
How would you describe your signature style and technique?
My work is process-led and developed through intuition and trust. Influenced by states of mind and emotional lability, my practice focuses on the creation of the work and not the outcome: experimentation and play remain at its heart, and each piece evolves through this ever-changing internal landscape. Fusing drawing with printing and painting, sensitive application of colour and gestural mark-making, my work is an emotional conversation: simultaneously calm and energetic in its language.

Tell us about your latest work. Where did you find inspiration and what is the story behind it?
My latest work is a large-scale acrylic and mixed media piece on wood panel. ‘Cocoon’ details the depths of our emotional space and its transient nature. It reflects a healing journey I took challenging limiting beliefs and developing an intense trust in my intuition.

Are there any exhibitions or events you are planning?
I’ll be joining the 9th annual Nunhead Art Trail in September this year, showing work in my home, and exhibiting at the Jeannie Avent Gallery in East Dulwich in November.
What is the best advice you received as an artist?
To trust in the process and let my hands do the work. Interesting things happen when there is no expectation and I’m not thinking too much.
