Giving the opportunity to showcase a new work by design graduates in a showroom setting is quite rare. Yet it is a great initiative and a confidence boost for the next generation of designers wanting to enter the market, launch their careers and make valuable industry connections. One brand that supports this idea is the British lighting company Fritz Fryer.

Back in 2022 the Hereford College of Arts (HCA) approached the brand with the proposal of a collaboration – at just the right time because founders, Simon and Karen, had been discussing the idea of reaching out to universities with a collaboration in mind too. It was perfect timing.

The aim? Champion the HCA students, provide industry knowledge, experience and real-time advice. To give them a commercial space to showcase their work.

“The common goal is a mutual respect for process; we get to impart (and test) our knowledge – they get attention from us when required. We can observe them as they develop their ideas and we get to meet fantastic talent and see innovative sustainable product ideas.

We are huge advocates for sustainability, so this is one of the objectives when choosing the work, also; how commercially viable it is, and the quality and workmanship of the collection.”

“Sharing our inside story of running a creative business with the students (warts and all) has been great. We have super conversations with the students about how they see their future careers and business ideas.  Everyone at Fritz Fryer enjoys the collaboration and is excited to see what the talented students will design and make next and it’s as beneficial to the business to hear a new perspective as it is for the students to learn how we work.

I think it is super beneficial for businesses to have a relationship/collaboration with colleges and universities as it enables us, as business owners, to think out of the box and it helps the students understand what it takes to create a viable business doing something they are talented at and love.”, says Simon.

This year, during the London Design Festival, Fritz Fryer welcomed and showcased the brilliant work of emerging designers, each bringing fresh perspectives on modern design and sustainability.

The showcase featured five standout designers, each with a unique take on sustainable living and design:

Alfie Newman

Alfie Newman exhibited furniture pieces that embodied simplicity, utility, and authenticity, drawing inspiration from minimalism and sustainable architecture. His designs, influenced by everyday structures like scaffolding, demonstrated efficiency and longevity, contributing to the sustainable development goals of reducing waste and promoting durable, eco-friendly products.

Jack Campden

Jack Campden explored the theme of loss and psychological voids, using forged metal and abstract forms to celebrate these intangible experiences. His work, though deeply personal, reflected broader sustainability goals by repurposing materials and questioning traditional wastefulness in design.

Jenny Papworth

Jenny Papworth reinterpreted the seven deadly sins in a modern context, focusing on self-destructive behaviours and their impact on the body. Her narrative-driven approach also explored the concept of sustainability, highlighting the physical and emotional weight that unsustainable practices can create in everyday life.

Sophie Ferrier

Sophie Ferrier used her craft to bridge the gap between environmental research and public understanding. Her work, rooted in sustainability and circular economy principles, reframed public attitudes toward waste by creatively recycling materials, aligning with sustainable development and climate action.

Tracy Caldah

Tracy Caldah presented sculptural forms that elevated discarded materials into meaningful, wearable art. Her pieces reminded viewers of the importance of zero waste and the value in what is often overlooked. Her focus on reusing materials echoed sustainable living and environmentally friendly practices.

Throughout the event, guests engaged in thought-provoking conversations with the designers, discussing everything from material choices to sustainable products and climate action. The event fostered meaningful connections between the emerging talent and members of the design industry, creating opportunities for collaboration in sustainability-focused projects.

This celebration of artistry, innovation, and sustainability marked another exciting chapter in Fritz Fryer’s collaboration with Hereford College of Art. “We are proud to support the next generation of eco-conscious designers and look forward to how they will shape the future of sustainable design and development.”, concludes Simon.
