Vinatha Reddy is an Indian-born British artist based in London. Being immersed in two cultures has shaped every aspect of her life, including her creative expression. This dual influence is reflected in her choice of colours and the way Vinatha layers paint, adding texture that makes her artworks deeply personal and unique.

Working primarily with acrylic and mixed media, using techniques such as impasto and sgraffito, bring depth and movement to her pieces. Vinatha’s passion lies in depicting the beauty of the natural world, evoking a sense of connection and inspiring a desire to preserve it for future generations. Vinatha exhibited at Royal Academy of Art Summer exhibition 2022 and has had exhibitions in London, New York, Bologna and her wearable art in collaboration with Empória Argão was showcased in Japan Fashion Week in 2024.

Here. we chat with Vinatha about her journey into the art world in more detail…

Can you tell us your backstory and how you got into the art world?

I am an Indian-born British artist based in London, England. Being immersed in two cultures has shaped every aspect of my life, including my creative expression. This dual influence is reflected in my choice of colors and the way I layer paint, adding texture that makes my work deeply personal and unique.

Beyond my artistic practice, I am also a physician. I hold a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) and a Membership of the Royal College of General Practitioners (MRCGP). My work in medicine involves gathering information from different sources to converge on a single diagnosis. In contrast, when I paint, I begin with a central focus and allow my imagination to expand outward, exploring endless possibilities.

This reversal of process not only fuels my creativity but also provides a much-needed escape, allowing me to step away from the structured world of medicine and into one of boundless artistic freedom.

How would you describe your signature style and technique?

I primarily work with acrylic and mixed media, using techniques such as impasto and sgraffito to bring depth and movement to my pieces. My passion lies in depicting the beauty of the natural world, evoking a sense of connection and inspiring a desire to preserve it for future generations. To me, abstract art is like a beautiful piece of music—it stirs emotions, memories, and thoughts that are deeply personal and unique to each viewer.

Can you tell us about your latest work? Where did you find inspiration and what is the story behind it?

For thousands of years, Varanasi has stood as the most religious place for Hindus, a city steeped in spirituality and history. I fell in love with the vibrant colors and the deep, ancient significance of this holy place, which inspired me to capture a moment of its eternal spirit in my painting. The warm hues of red, orange, and gold represent the flames of the oil lamps against the backdrop of the sacred river, reflecting the divine energy and the timeless rituals that have been carried out for centuries.

The textured strokes convey the rhythmic movements of the priests and the flickering of the lights, evoking the atmosphere of devotion and reverence that fills the air during the evening prayers. Through this painting, I aimed to encapsulate the essence of this sacred ceremony and the profound connection between the earthly and the divine.

Are there any exhibitions or events you are planning?

I’m excited to share that I have two major events coming up where my artwork will be showcased in both fine art and fashion.

On September 13, 2025, I will be exhibiting a selection of my paintings in Manhattan, New York. This exhibition is a wonderful opportunity to present my work to a new audience and share my artistic vision in a city known for its vibrant art scene.

I’m also thrilled to be collaborating with the Portuguese luxury brand Empório Aragão, incorporating my artwork into their fashion line. My designs will be featured on clothing, shoes, bags, and watches, bringing together fine art and high fashion. This wearable art collection will be showcased on the Haute Couture Boat during New York Fashion Week, an exciting platform to merge my artistic practice with the world of couture.

Additionally, some of my wearable art will be featured in the Weave Runway fashion show in Osaka, Japan, later this year, further expanding my exploration of art in fashion.

What is the best advice you received as an artist?

The best advice I received from an artist was to paint for myself rather than trying to create what others might expect or want. True artistic expression comes from within, and when I paint authentically, my work carries deeper meaning and resonates more powerfully.
