Maro home story

Founded by one-woman-band Megan Holloway back in 2020, Maro Home is an independent upholstery and homeware brand which offers truly sustainable designs that are built to last. Working directly with the best of British-based craftspeople and workshops, it champions traditional skills and techniques to bring its considered designs to life.

Maro Home offers a range of bespoke sofas and upholstery, lighting and ceramics, focusing on using the highest quality, natural and low VOC materials to create its environmentally friendly, heirloom-quality collections.

Maro Home offers two beautifully classic and timeless sofa designs which are handmade to order in a family-run workshop in Long Eaton. Focusing on creating high quality sofas that are designed to last, the Sonder and Seren sofas are made from the finest natural and sustainable materials, and come with a choice of fitted, relaxed or frilled covers that can be easily removed and cleaned – or replaced when you want to refresh your interiors.

The hardwood frames are handmade from FSC-certified Beech and Birch, with a serpentine frame being stretched across the rails of the seat and back to help protect their integrity and offer long-lasting comfort.

The frames are glued, screwed and dowelled the traditional way before being layered with rubberised horse hair (made from coconut fibres) and a fire retardant, natural wool interliner. This is then wrapped with a wool interliner and covered in a calico lining before the customer’s chosen final fabric cover is fitted over the top. Maro Home can work with any suitable upholstery fabric – plain, print, pattern and vintage where possible. Mixing and matching fabrics is also possible as every piece is worked on individually and tailored on the job to achieve the perfect loose cover fit as each fabric behaves a little differently.

Seren sofa

The Seren is an elegant armless sofa whilst the Sonder features gently flared arms for added support. Both come with deep, sumptuous seats, and as the furniture is made to order, customers can choose from standard sizing, go custom or even choose either style as a sofabed.

The slim base profiles and leg height allow for slim storage drawers to slot underneath both designs, ideal for hiding away exercise gear or toys. The legs are removable for ease of access, and if access is really tricky, the Sonder’s arms can be removed. For larger sizes, both sofas can be made as a bolt-in-half option with the slipcover concealing the join once in place.

Maro Home offers slipcover sofas not only as an antidote to fast interiors, but to also avoid working with chemically treated fire retardant fabrics which have an often high passive toxic load. The absence of foam in the frame construction in favour of coconut fibres and wool reflects this too.

The only foam offered is in the seat cushion fillings, which is an Origin plant-polymer composite made with sustainable Castor oil (not petrochemicals) and wrapped in recycled fibre and duck feather layers. Again, this is purely down to customer preference and can be swapped with Latex or omitted altogether for pure fibre/feather options instead.

Megan Holloway, Founder and Creative Director, comments: “My aim with our upholstery collection was to create beautiful, classic designs that were built to last from the finest natural and sustainable materials here in the UK. I wanted to keep the sofas as affordable as possible too, and it’s why we can work with any budget or fabric.

Everything from our sofa frames and upholstery, through to the removable covers are made and tailored in the same family-run workshop in Long Eaton, so production is vertically integrated from start to finish which enables us to closely monitor comfort and quality. We can also create loose covers for customer’s existing sofas and offer reupholstery services too. We don’t offer any in-house fabrics, instead working with clients to pick a suitable fabric from a fabric house of their choice, allowing them to create pieces that are truly unique to them and their design style.

Stowe ottoman and Sonder sofa

We’ve also developed two ottomans in the Wish and Stowe, which follow the same premise as our sofas. All covers on all of our upholstery are fully removable, which includes the body fabric too, and we offer a sourcing service to help clients find the right fabrics for them, if needed. We do, however, not use any fire treated fabrics due to the petrochemicals they contain – they are not sustainable, bad for the environment and can leach toxins into the home.

We want to ensure all our products are as natural as possible, making them not only sustainable choices, but healthier options over the mass-produced furniture you can purchase on the high street. Ultimately, it’s about creating a healthier, conscious way of living that is free of compromise.”

As well as upholstered furniture, Maro Home also offer accessories collections which include elegant and tactile, hand-turned wooden lamp bases and eye-catching hand-turned ceramics.

The Ziggy lamp base is hand-turned to order from Beech in Leicestershire, and is available in raw wood or a custom painted gloss finish, whilst the Strobe conical lamp base is turned from a single piece of Oak. Both come with a choice of bronze, brass or nickel fixings and 2m natural twisted flex cord, helping to brighten up any corner with character and charm.

Similarly, the ceramics are also hand-thrown in Leicestershire, with the Classic butter dish, Wavy butter dish and Little Wavy pots all bringing classic charm to any dining table.
