Judy century abstract artist pink floral painting

Introducing abstract floral artist Judy Century who paints expressive floral and landscape paintings. Drawing from patterns and structures found in nature, Judy plays with scale, contrast and pattern to create contemporary, fresh and colourful art pieces with elegance and style.

Judy is one of a small group of artists who regularly works with BobCat Gallery, a small scale gallery specialising in original art at affordable prices.

Here we chat with her about her journey so far…

Tell us more about your journey into the art world

I reconnected with my passion for painting during lockdown, when I was on furlough from my corporate job and finally had the head space and time to paint more seriously. I fell back in love with the magic of creating, the escapism it provides, and the buzz of being truly imaginative. I built up a collection, networked a lot and started exhibiting and showing my work. I now exhibit regularly and work with a few galleries.

I have always had an interest in interior styling and it’s such a great feeling to enhance décor with my original artwork and to bring pleasure to buyers! Alongside painting and exhibiting, I now run painting workshops where I can pass on some of the magic of creating to other people, and demonstrate that everyone can have a go and take away something positive!

How would you describe your signature style and technique?

I paint expressively with vivid colours. I like to see the brush strokes in my work and use bold and contrasting colours to add energy and movement.

Can you tell us about your latest work? Where did you find inspiration and what is the story behind it?

I am inspired by nature and the great variety and interest it offers. After a while focused on floral paintings, enjoying the vibrant colours and delicate structures, I’m making a shift back to landscapes. I’m drawn to light and shade and sweeping vistas and can’t look at a view out of the window the same way anymore, without seeing it as a potential painting! I like to create scenes that viewers can escape into and enjoy what the natural world has to offer but add my own twist of lively mark-making and highlights of interesting, unexpected colours.

Are there any exhibitions or events you are planning in near future?

I am taking part in a number of pop-up exhibitions organised by the wonderful online gallery, BobCat Gallery, and I am planning a group exhibition in Spring with a collective of local artists who I regularly exhibit with. I also exhibit as part of ArtCan throughout the year.

What is the best advice you’ve been given as an artist?

Trust the process! Paintings always go through a questionable stage in the middle, and you have to have the confidence to trust your intuition and skill that it’ll all come together in the end (usually)…
