artist Anne sweet interview on estila

London based mixed media artist, Anne Sweet, loves to experiment with different styles and mediums, giving her a broad portfolio including pastels, acrylics, ink and printing techniques. Anne creates abstract works, portraits, still lifes and various mixed media pieces on canvas, making her a very versatile artist not afraid to try new and different things.

Anne has exhibited at Battersea Arts Centre and at Rosie Q’s Art Cafe in Wimbledon and has painted numerous commissions.

Anne is one of the core artists regularly working with BobCat Gallery, a small scale gallery specialising in original art at affordable prices.

Here we chat with her about her journey so far…

Tell us more about your journey in the art world.

I have always been creative, however for the majority of my life my creativity was channelled into other areas, including landscape design. A few years ago I decided to enrol in a couple of creative classes, and I realised how much joy I got from making art, even if I preferred to be left to my own devices rather than being told what to do!

Since then, I haven’t looked back. As well as setting up a home studio, I’ve exhibited everywhere from Battersea Arts Centre to Shepherd Market in Mayfair, and had a solo show at Rosie Q’s Art Cafe in Wimbledon. I’ve also been lucky enough to have painted numerous commissions for people who love my work.

How would you describe your signature style and technique?

I love to experiment with different styles and media, so rather than one signature style, I have a broad portfolio including pastels, acrylics, ink and printing techniques. I can’t just stick to one thing, I find inspiration in all sorts of places and I am always asking ‘what if…’.

I create abstract works, portraits, still lifes and various mixed media pieces. I am curious and love to try out new techniques – I find that there is always something new to learn from other artists as well, who inspire me to try different ways of doing things.

Can you tell us about your latest work? Where did you find inspiration and what is the story behind it?

I’ve recently been more drawn to landscapes, including painting a bluebell forest filled with towering birch trees which fills me with calm, however I have also been working on abstract commissions, plus a special painting for a couple to commemorate their wedding day – it features their wedding flowers and favours to bring them happy memories every time they see it.

Are there any exhibitions or events you are planning in near future?

My work is currently available with BobCat Gallery at a new space in Putney Exchange, South West London – they host regular events in store if you are nearby!

What is the best advice you’ve been given as an artist?

Have fun. Be brave. Learn from your mistakes as sometimes they can inspire you to create something totally different. Enjoy the journey.
