Swiss artist Karin Lanini aka KLA is based in London. Karin’s work is a natural manifestation of contemporary and abstract art that draws from her passion for life and nature.
Here we share Karin’s story into the art world…
Tell us more about your journey into the art world
I was born and raised in the quaint landscapes of Switzerland, a place that shaped my early artistic experiences. After spending a decade in London, which I now call home, I felt the pull of my artistic passion and decided to carve out a significant space for my creativity. While my academic journey initially focused on fashion design in Switzerland, my thirst for artistic exploration embraced various forms – from fashion and jewellery design to flowers, cuisine, interior design, and ceramics, eventually leading me after lots of learning and growing to the realm of painting.
After years fully dedicated to my family and children, I have finally discovered my sanctuary, a space where I can proudly define myself as a full-time artist and find my identity in the world of fine arts. Abstract and contemporary art have become my channels for instinctive expression, and fascinating avenues to explore my inner world.
Far from being mere decorative elements, artworks represent for me tools of emotional expression and visual therapy with only positive side effects. I cherish this journey into uncharted territories, utilizing painting as a means to discover new emotions and find profound inner peace. The meditative vision that nourishes my soul and mind translates into a state of relaxation, allowing me to release tensions and achieve an overall sense of well-being.
How would you describe your signature style and technique?
With enthusiasm and passion for life and nature, I convey the emotions they evoke to me through blank canvases, breathing life into my creations. Everyday objects, encounters during travels, and the beauty of both cityscapes and my beloved mountains serve as constant inspiration.
My artistic approach centres on balancing orderly grooves, casual clefts, and spontaneous reliefs, creating an indefinable harmony. Developed through a meticulous process of layering and mixing acrylic paints and pigments. The application and manipulation of these materials over time contribute to the development of depth and volume in my creations, yielding contrasts and cracks that evoke an atmosphere of age and lived experience.
In each piece, foundational elements are crafted using unconventional tools, including lime, marble powder, collage paper, and sand. These materials become my artistic instruments, enabling me to express my creative vision. The result is a balance that eludes rigid definitions, directly communicating and conveying emotions, leaving ample space for the abstract.
Can you tell us about your latest work? Where did you find inspiration and what is the story behind it?
My mind is a whirlwind of hundreds of ideas that dance incessantly, each representing a new potential to explore. I find myself immersed in a continuous process of experimenting with new materials, seeking uncharted hues, and progressing through my artistic series: Bloom, Goldeneye, Decay & Rebirth and Plunge.
These series reflect an ongoing commitment, a never-ending labour that evolves continually over time. Each project is a narrative in itself, a story that unfolds through the creation of artworks exploring unique and distinctive concepts.
Currently, the focal point of my attention is the Goldeneye series, where I am delving into the use of 24-karat gold. This noble metal adds a luxurious and unique dimension to my creations, shaping artworks that explore the connection between precious material and artistic expression. It is a captivating experience that propels me to further explore the potential of this precious material and delve deeper into the meaning and symbolism it can convey.
Are there any exhibitions or events you are planning in near future?
My next exhibition will take place this month from 18th March to 18th April at The Holy Art in London and The Holy Art virtual show in New York from 22nd to 24th March.
Also, I have a piece selected for the exhibition in Milan to the Esposizione d’arte contemporanea Art Brera, “Abstract Life” from 6th to 12th April.
What is the best advice you’ve been given as an artist?
The valuable advice I received as an artist was to dare, to have no fear, and to always follow the voice within me. Embracing this guidance with determination, I continue to trust my instincts, fearlessly experimenting and unleashing my creativity.
Day by day, I grow more confident in myself and in what I create. Each step forward represents an achievement, an opportunity to explore new horizons and deepen the connection with my artistic expression.
Everything I create is infused with a personal purpose, a deep desire to bring pleasure to the soul and mind. Every brushstroke and every creation is an act of dedication to this personal mission, a way to evoke emotions and stimulate reflections.
Following the inner voice and embracing experimentation has become the driving force fueling my artistic growth.
Ultimately, my artistic journey is a path of self-discovery and sharing emotions through art, where daring has become a mantra guiding every brushstroke and every new creation.
