The Design Archives introduces vibrant archival fabrics inspired by ikat and kilim textiles
Share
Earlier this year The Design Archives launched its Samarkand collection of vibrant and eclectic archival fabrics inspired by traditional ikat and hand woven kilim textiles. There are three designs in the collection which beautifully convey the evocative textile history of the traditional Silk Road route. Sourced from the Crowson Archive the prints have been rescaled and recoloured in range of colourways from calming neutrals to rich and vibrant jewel tones.
“Our enduring fascination with the riches and opulence of the East was the starting point of this collection” explains Sharon Crowson, founder and Creative Director of The Design Archives. “The inspirational pattern and colour of these traditional designs were ripe for reinvention, and I believe the provenance of such classic designs will resonate with designers looking for authentic fabrics which tell a story.”
AMISHA is an Ikat inspired print in five colourways on a luxurious linen mix cloth. An intricate and detailed design it offers a sophisticated and subtle pattern which creates an easy design to mix and match with plain fabrics.
CYRUS showcases the classic rhythmic ogee pattern which was used widely throughout the 16th century in Turkish and Persian brocades. Interestingly, the origins of the ogee, with its symmetrical undulating lines, can be traced as far back as Cyrus II the Great in Ancient Persia – a timely reminder of the enduring appeal of a simple repeat motif.
QARSHI is a large scale geometric stripe which evokes the style of kilim rugs and is the name of the city in Uzbekistan famous for its woven flat carpets. The concise and detailed pattern is beautifully symmetrical, which makes it ideal for stylish upholstery such as ottomans and footstools, as well as statement window dressings.
All fabrics are available by metre and are suitable for curtains, soft furnishings and upholstery.
