Apartment 48: designing the Flat Iron apartment in New York

Share

modern loft apartment in New York designed by Apartment 48 Rayman Boozer

With focus on modern elegance and functionality, the Flat Iron apartment in the heart of New York City features a neutral colour palette with pops of colour that helps to create a warm and inviting family home. Designed by interior design studio Apartment 48, which is led by interior designer Rayman Boozer, each room tells a story of its occupants. From the custom-designed furniture and hand-picked decorative elements to the carefully curated artwork, every detail of this space reflects the studio’s unmatched attention to detail and commitment to creating beautiful and lovable modern spaces.

The client for this loft apartment renovation is a Google executive and her husband, a commercial real estate investor, who were seeking a modern space that could suit their family of four. Making use of the natural light and open floor plan space, the furnishings and decor are both functional and artistic, creating an atmosphere that brings delight to its occupants.

Here we chat with Rayman about designing with stories..

Let’s start from the beginning. How did you get into the interior design industry?
I initially started in the home furnishings industry, opening Apartment 48 in Chelsea as a lived-in, shoppable experience. Over time, my passion for creating unique and vibrant spaces grew, and I transitioned towards interior design. It was a natural progression for me to combine my knowledge of materials, objects, and art with my love for colors and contemporary furnishings.

How would you describe your signature style?
My signature style is characterized by the combination of vibrant colors, exotic materials, and contemporary furnishings. I strive to create spaces that exude optimism, relaxation, and effortlessness. Each project is tailored to the client’s preferences, but my designs often incorporate a harmonious blend of bold hues, luxurious textures, and curated art pieces.

You have a very interesting approach to designing spaces through narratives and creating design stories. What is your design process?
For me, designing spaces is about more than just aesthetics; it’s about telling a compelling story. I begin by understanding my clients’ desires, their lifestyles, and the emotions they want their spaces to evoke. I then develop a design narrative, weaving together elements such as colors, textures, and furniture choices to create a cohesive and engaging story. Throughout the process, I collaborate closely with my clients, ensuring that their personalities and visions are reflected in the final design.

Your favorite project?
It’s difficult to pick just one favorite project, as each one holds a special place in my heart including The Flat Iron Project (above). However, if I had to choose, I loved working on Buildseries, the online entertainment channel owned by yahoo.

What advice would you give to a designer just entering the industry?
My advice to a designer just entering the industry would be to stay true to your unique vision and design perspective. It’s essential to develop your personal style while continuously expanding your knowledge and staying open to new inspirations. Embrace collaboration and actively seek opportunities to learn from experienced professionals in the field. Finally, never underestimate the power of networking and building genuine relationships within the design community.
