A globally celebrated mixed media artist, Patricia Mitchell is collaborating with an interior design and homeware brand Kelling Designs on a show which showcases Patricia’s exquisite and intricate botanical artworks in their London’s showroom.

Here we share with Patricia the backstory and more information about the show..

How did the collaboration come about?

Emma Deterding of Kelling Designs and I made contact via Instagram during COVID and had fun getting to know each other over Instagram (which we all know was exceptionally active during lockdown!). We admired each others work, me – her bold use of colour and for her,  she enjoyed watching my paper piece evolve from a plain sheet of white paper to a botanical work of art. Last year she very kindly invited me to be Artist in Residence at her Kelling Designs showroom in Chelsea.

What was the curation process? How did you decide on what art pieces to showcase which would fit the Kelling’s aesthetic?

As 99.9% of my work is commission based, it meant that I would have to design and create a bespoke portfolio for Kelling to complement their interior design. This really was a welcomed relief as the majority of my work I have to use very neutral colours so using bright orange’s, limes, teals and pinks threw me totally out of my comfort zone, but was very healthy for my growth as an artist.

The show is all about the relationship between the sky and the earth, so I felt it was important to use a narrative that would really draw the viewer into the earths atmosphere without detracting from the stunning Kelling showroom and all the treasures they have on show. It was a thoughtful process but I think I managed to create something really special to offset the Kelling aesthetic with my own work.

Can you tell us more about some of the pieces that are available to view?

There was much thought and design which went behind this body of work. I wanted to produce something that the public had not seen before and push my boundaries. There is a heavy influence of coloured mirror with crushed gold so that the room is reflected and the light has the opportunity to dance around the room. I have also used a heavy element of gold in other pieces too, masses of botanical interest of course, and the story that highlights an interpretation of a paradisical view of nature and the real chaotic story behind the scenes. With the bespoke narrative work (as shown in the circular piece in the Kelling Dining Room).

My work takes on many different forms to do with nature – always handpainted silhouettes to create an abstract version to compliment the interior design of the room. Working with designers has been one of the highlights of my career as I get to meet the most incredibly talented people and learn so much about their craft.

All art pieces are available for viewing until the end of August. Please contact Patricia Mitchell to arrange a private tour or Kelling Designs showroom team for more information.
