Independent interiors brand, Annika Reed Studio released new art-led wallpaper design called “Chattering of Choughs” inspired by Annika’s childhood spent in Cornwall during summer holidays. The collective noun for a chough is a chatter and in 1973 the last of the Cornish chough was seen patrolling the cliffs in Newquay. For the next 28 years, choughs remained absent from Cornwall until 2001 when they made a natural return to the Cornish cliffs.

This elegant wallpaper celebrates the return of the chough and has them chattering together on a wall.

Available in four colourways – Decor Blue, Arsenic Green, Hooker & Currant and Red Topaz, the wallpaper is made sustainably in the UK.

All Annika Reed papers are FSC Certified and printed with fade proof, environmentally friendly inks. They are made using Britain’s finest digital wallpaper manufacturer helping to reduce carbon footprint.

With each roll of wallpaper sold Annika Reed Studio makes a donation towards purchasing one acre of habitat and protect it in perpetuity for wildlife.

The specifications:

  • Roll Dimensions: W 52cm x H 10m
  • Wall cover per roll is approximately: 5.2m²
  • Pattern Repeat: W 26cm x H 26cm (approx)
  • Price: £165 per roll

ABOUT ANNIKA REED STUDIO

In her childhood Annika Reed was constantly surrounded by pattern books in her dad’s upholstery workshop. After school she would sit and admire his latest creation, transforming objects most would abandon into exquisite pieces of furniture.

After achieving 1st class Honours degree from the University of Brighton and six years later an MA from University of Arts London in Fine Art Printmaking with a specialism in woodblock printing, Annika received many awards for her printmaking and worked alongside masters of my craft in China, Portugal and America.

Then in 2018, while pregnant with her daughter,  Annika wanted to decorate her nursery in wallpaper that came to life, that would fill her head with images and ideas that she would remember forever. There was nothing on the market that was fun, yet sophisticated, quirky but not childish. It was clear she had to make the wallpaper herself. That’s when both Annika Reed Studio and her daughter were born.

The Printing Process

All Annika Reed designs begin with a sketchbook and pen. Annika refines then hand draws the images onto a piece of Asian wood, where she carves them according to the age-old practices she learnt whilst doing a residency at the University of Shanghai in China.

Traditional woodcuts are printed from separate blocks, one created for each colour. It takes at least a month to complete a full series of carvings and colour layers.

This process of wood carving and painting in layers produces uniquely rich, layered, painterly prints.

The print designs are printed by hand in her studio in London using non-toxic techniques. The ink is rolled onto the wood and printed over the previous layer. Some designs only need one colour, others require several.

This technique lends itself for bespoke design where any design size and colour can be created and matched to specific design requirements.
