Here, we chat with Ashima about her creative transitions and abstract expressionism
Can you tell us your backstory and how you got into the art world?
My artistic journey began early in life… After earning a degree in Fine Arts, I embarked on a career in advertising, working as a creative visualizer. While this experience honed my skills and exposed me to diverse creative avenues, I yearned for the freedom to express my unique artistic vision.
I have gradually transitioned away from commercial work and focused on creating pieces that reflected my personal style and interests. The initial stages of this transition were undoubtedly challenging, but my persistence and dedication to my craft have ultimately paid off. Today, I am grateful for the opportunity to share my artwork with the world and continue to pursue my passion.
My art extends beyond traditional canvases. I design silk scarves featuring my hand-illustrated artworks and collaborate with an art wear brand to integrate my creative techniques into their designs.
Additionally, I conduct wellbeing workshops to demonstrate the transformational power of art for mental and emotional wellness. My holistic approach is further exemplified by my recently published interactive book, Gratitude and Art Journal: Nurture Mindfulness, Abundance and Joy in Life, which emphasises the connection between visually captivating art and personal wellbeing.
Rising Consciousness 1.
How would you describe your signature style and technique?
My signature style is a captivating fusion of classic and contemporary elements, deeply rooted in my Indian heritage and a profound appreciation for Japanese aesthetics. My work is characterised by meticulous detail and a deep exploration of the human connection to the natural world.
My technique draws from traditional Shodo calligraphy and Southeast Asian motifs. This classical foundation is seamlessly integrated with modern mixed media techniques, creating a unique visual language. I’m particularly captivated by the interplay of light and shadow, utilising harmonious colours, intricate line art patterns, and expressive brushstrokes to craft visually striking pieces.
Recently, I’ve expanded into abstract expressionism, allowing my emotions and subconscious to guide my creative process. This has led to a more intuitive and spontaneous style, resulting in artwork that is both visually captivating and emotionally resonant. My canvases feature delicate lines and calligraphic strokes, reminiscent of both ancient Indian and Japanese artistry, alongside expressive brushwork that conveys emotion and energy. Each piece is imbued with layers of symbolism, weaving narratives that invite contemplation and introspection.
Rising Consciousness 2.
Can you tell us about your latest work? Where did you find inspiration and what is the story behind it?
I’m currently immersed in two interconnected series, “Rising Consciousness” and “Journey of Soul,” both of which are deeply personal and reflective of my artistic philosophy.
The “Rising Consciousness” series centers on the “rising” of inner awareness and the transformative journey to enlightenment. This profound theme is expressed through a compelling convergence of expressive calligraphy strokes and delicate symbolic patterns, aiming to reflect different levels of consciousness through seamless layers.
My use of calligraphy here is deeply influenced by the meditative discipline of Shodo, the Japanese art of calligraphy writing. For me, Shodo is not just about forming characters; it’s about channeling inner energy and intention through the brush, a direct conduit to capturing the essence of the “rising” of awareness. The deliberate movement and breath control inherent in Shodo resonate perfectly with the quest for enlightenment – a journey of focused effort and unfolding understanding.
The “Journey of Soul” series delves into fluctuating human emotions, depicting them through dynamic calligraphy and delicate patterns, anchored by the recurring motifs of a butterfly, koi fish, and lotus form. These motifs are particularly significant to me because they are deeply symbolic within Indian traditions, yet their forms are often simplified and universally recognisable.
The butterfly represents transformation and rebirth, the koi fish signifies perseverance and strength, and the lotus, emerging pristine from mud, embodies purity, enlightenment, and spiritual growth. By incorporating these highly symbolic yet visually simplified patterns, I aim to create imagery that is immediately accessible and evokes a sense of shared human experience, even as the underlying narrative is complex and deeply personal.
Both series share a similar minimalist yet impactful color palette of shades of grey, black, white, and gold, which contributes to their ethereal and reflective quality. The works in both series feature seamless layers, visually representing the different levels of consciousness and the complex inner landscape of human experience.
The inspiration for both series comes directly from my personal reflection and introspection. My intention with these works is to create pieces that go beyond mere observation, encouraging viewers to actively engage with the art and discover something new each time they encounter it, fostering a deep personal connection.
Through the deliberate strokes of calligraphy, reminiscent of the intentionality in Shodo, and the universally resonant language of Indian symbolic patterns, I aim to invite viewers into their own contemplative space. My abstract compositions, inspired by nature’s inherent patterns and rhythms, are more than just visual experiences; they are poignant reminders of the beauty, fragility, and profound unity of our shared existence, echoing the interconnectedness I strive to convey through every brushstroke and symbolic form.
