When creating a safe and healthy home, non-toxic products and practices should be high priority. However, one frequently overlooked aspect are the potential hazards hiding in our sofas. Yorkshire-based Slow, the family-owned sofa company, explains how harmful toxic chemicals commonly found in conventional sofas are and what benefits non-toxic sofas have on indoor air quality and overall health and wellbeing.

Conventional sofas are often manufactured using a variety of toxic chemicals that can adversely affect our health and the environment. One primary concern is the use of flame retardant chemicals, such as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), which are added to meet fire safety regulations.

However, these chemicals have been linked to various health issues, including hormone disruption, neurological problems, and even cancer. Additionally, conventional sofa materials may contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs), such as formaldehyde, which can off-gas and pollute indoor air quality, leading to respiratory issues and allergies.

When shopping for non-toxic sofas in the UK, it’s important to be aware of particular chemicals and their potential health risks. Look out for flame-retardant chemicals like PBDEs, which have been banned in some countries but may still be present in imported furniture. Formaldehyde is another chemical to avoid, as it is commonly used in adhesives and can cause respiratory issues.

Other chemicals to watch out for include phthalates, which are used to soften plastics, and perfluorinated compounds (PFCs), found in stain-resistant treatments. These chemicals have been linked to various health concerns, ranging from reproductive issues to developmental problems in children.

Opting for non-toxic sofas can reduce the risk of chemical exposure and create a safer living environment. Sofas, such as Slow, are thoughtfully designed with natural fabrics, organic latex, and sustainably sourced wood, ensuring they are both environmentally friendly and conducive to a healthier indoor atmosphere.

“We started Slow because I wanted to make furniture that’s as healthy for the people using it as it is beautiful. A sofa should be a safe place to relax, not a source of invisible pollutants.

Our sofas are made almost entirely from natural materials, with the exception of the springs. The top fabric is often the only component that may introduce a synthetic element. Otherwise, we use materials such as beech, poplar, natural latex, coconut coir, wool, and cotton throughout our sofas. Each of these elements is chosen for its durability, comfort, and environmental responsibility, aligning with our commitment to sustainability.

More people are realising that furniture isn’t just a temporary purchase; it’s something that should last and feel good to own over the long term. There’s a growing awareness around the hidden costs of cheaply made, disposable furniture – costs to the environment and to our well-being.”, adds Greig, co-founder of Slow.
