Artifact Lighting: Transforming a barn into a charming family kitchen

Artifact Lighting, the lighting design specialists, helped their clients in the beautiful Dorset countryside transform three barns into a warm and welcoming family home. To retain the building’s charming details, the owners opted for using the Rocco pendant to highlight the barns natural features.

The kitchen beautifully blends modern design with the rustic charm of the barns original details. The owners meticulously selected natural materials and colours that compliment the rich oak and stone features. The result is a timeless kitchen that radiates warmth and character.

Central to the kitchen’s design are the Rocco pendants in concrete and slate, which not only provide practical task lighting but also add an aesthetic touch that ties the design elements together. These fixtures enhance the overall ambiance, casting a soft glow over the space and highlighting the  kitchen’s beautiful finishes.

The space features a sophisticated colour palette, with the kitchen cabinets painted in a tundra sage. This choice of colour creates a serene backdrop that complements the natural sandstone walls, blending cohesively with the concrete Rocco.

The combination of elegant lighting, harmonious colours, and carefully selected materials results in a kitchen that is both functional and inviting.

About Rocco:
Each Rocco light is crafted by hand, using only plaster, sand and water. Each light is poured, sanded, and coated in a protective, natural oil. Each piece is unique and one-off, both in pattern and colour. It comes in 9 different earthy colours and a choice of fixture and rope colour options.

About Artifact Lighting:

Artifact Lighting was founded in 2011 by Greg Bailey and Mark McConnell, driven by a love of antique lighting and making bespoke pieces from their studio with their talented team. Inspired by the heritage of English manufacturing, they wanted to keep the value of ‘Made In England’ within their products, designing contemporary lighting with traditional inspiration.

Their vision was to use local, natural materials, particularly plaster to create unique pieces that are handcrafted, environmentally responsible, and enhance the emotional connection to their space. Designing and making the Rocco pendant, deepened their expertise and sparked a fascination with plaster’s performance and aesthetic potential. With the launch of their workshop along the coast of Dorset, Artifact Lighting has become a collective of talented artisans committed to creating designs that reflect traditional lighting aesthetics.

Crafting each light in their workshop allows them to gain firsthand insight into the production process. This lets them contribute at every step of design, connecting the initial idea to the final product. Motivated by this inspiration, their latest work the Rocco draws from the textures, patterns, and colours of Dorset’s coastal cliffs and landscapes.

Handcrafted with care from a blend of plaster, sand, and water, they prioritise using non-toxic, natural, and sustainable materials. Combining centuries-old knowledge with modern techniques, Artifact Lighting developed a product that was kind to the environment while being a beautiful and functional piece.
