The YUSSICO story: from law to fine leather craft

A fine leather goods brand, YUSSICO, was founded and is led by designer-maker Yusuf Osman. The YUSSICO story started whilst Yusuf was training to be a solicitor, after studying law at The London School of Economics. To counterbalance his professional journey in law, he was exploring different creative outlets where he could work with his hands.

As an avid workshop taker, he tried various crafts but one particular material connected with him more than others – fine natural materials. Then, a chance weekend workshop in The Cotswolds introduced Yusuf to the world of traditional British leather craftsmanship and so began a quest that has taken Yusuf all over the world to learn from the best, returning home to obsessively hone his skills in his home studio.

An all-consuming hobby turned into a career when Yusuf moved YUSSICO into his current studio at Cockpit Studios Deptford to pursue leather-working full-time. His work has been exhibited at the Walsall Leather Museum and featured in Crafts Magazine. In addition, he has taught leather-working to actor John Malkovich and magician Drummond Money-Coutts and has worked with brands such as eBay and Jo Malone to name a few.

Yusuf is the UK’s foremost authority on fine saddle-stitched leather goods. From sketch to final stitch, each YUSSICO piece, whether it’s handbags or homeware accessories, is conceived and made in-house using the finest cuts of leather and a unique blend of contemporary and traditional techniques.

A firm believer in the preservation of heritage skills, Yusuf teaches leather-working to students at Compass School in Bermondsey which once was the heart of UK’s leather trade. Yusuf also runs regular workshops for adults and children at his studio.

Furthermore, YUSSICO is a member of the UK Trade Association for the leather industry that works to promote the interests of this beautifully natural and inherently sustainable material.
