Extending the sitting room, and adding tall windows to frame the stunning grounds outside was the perfect solution to the interior dilemma faced by interior designer, Suzie Tipple from House With Blue Shutters. Having recently purchased the 8-bedroom house in Berkshire, Suzie’s clients were anxious to balance the ground floor living space as the sitting room felt disproportionately small to the size of the property.
Working alongside an architectural practice, Suzie’s vision came to life when the room was extended by four metres and a huge glass lantern roof was added. The floor to ceiling doors allow for easy direct access to the garden where a large brick stone patio has now been laid making it the perfect spot for the family to entertain in the summer.
The interior decoration was kept intentionally simple – brilliant white walls allow the black frame of the doors and windows to pop, and the view is not obscured by window dressings. The natural wooden parquet floor is honest and doesn’t fight for attention but instead blends perfectly with the raw rattan rug and the simple off-white cotton sofas. The room scheme has an understated charm about it, which is complemented by the comfortable mix of antique pieces alongside more contemporary furniture.
An elegant marble mantle piece surrounds the new woodburner, which is flanked either side by simple white shelves and refined cabinetry.
Both interior designer and homeowner were delighted with the transformation of this space. Despite being a large space, the feeling on entering the room is of comfort, calm and serenity. This has been achieved most effectively through the gentle colour palette and the invitation for the outside to feel part of the room scheme thanks to the beautiful floor to ceiling windows.
